Saks Academy in Maidstone has partnered-up with Age UK
Our Maidstone Academy is officially working alongside Age UK and we couldn’t be prouder. We aim to play a key role in tackling the loneliness and isolation problem in and around Maidstone by offering complimentary hairdressing services, while enjoying a tea or coffee and a friendly chat.
Age UK provide life-enhancing services and vital support to people in later life. Most people will feel lonely at some point in their lives. It’s a deeply personal experience that - in most cases - will thankfully pass. But for a growing number of people, particularly those in later life, loneliness can define their lives and have a significant impact on their well-being. Over recent years, Age UK have gained a greater understanding of the impact loneliness has on our health. Age UK now know that, for example, the effect of loneliness and isolation can be as harmful to our health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day and is more damaging than obesity. It is associated with depression, sleep problems, impaired cognitive health, heightened vascular resistance, hypertension, psychological stress and mental health problems.
This is where we step in! We want to help Age UK make the UK a great place to grow older. We want to do this by inspiring, supporting and enabling in a number of ways. We want to offer support to those individuals in need of some extra company whilst nurturing the growing talent of our apprentices in learning the creative art of Hairdressing. Saks Academy offers complimentary hairdressing services to all those receiving support from Age UK Maidstone and the West Kent Befriending Service. With around 80 students attending the Saks Academy each week, our apprentices are continuously developing their customer service and communication skills and enjoy every opportunity working with clients from all walks of life.
In September, our Maidstone Academy welcomed their first client from our partnership, Michael. Michael had his hair cut by our level 2 apprentice Sophie Milham from Cranbrook.
The staff and apprentices look forward to welcoming more visitors at the Saks Academy in Maidstone soon.
