AGE: 18

Kayleigh knew from an early age that hairdressing was the career for her.

After having the opportunity to take part in a government pilot scheme at school Kayleigh left with a Hairdressing Diploma and decided that an apprenticeship was the best way to begin her new career in the dynamic world of hairdressing.

While in her final stages of school Kayleigh began working as a Saturday girl at W Hair & Beauty salon in Darlington, and once she left school the salon jumped at the chance to take Kayleigh on as an apprentice.

During this time her talent and passion for the industry has been developed and nurtured so much so Kayleigh has gone on to be crowned our national Hairdressing Apprentice Award winner while studying her Intermediate Apprenticeship, and then last year topped the awards in the Advanced Apprentice category too.

Here Kayleigh talks about her experience as an apprentice:

“I knew from an early age that I wanted to be a hairdresser, I always used to practice on my friends and family’s hair.  I was lucky to get the chance to take part in a pilot scheme at work which meant I left school with a taste of what hairdressing is really like.

“I’ve loved my time as a Saks Apprentice, it’s great as all of the training is carried out in the salon, I don’t have to go out on day release or anything like that. I’m due to finish my advanced apprenticeship in February next year, then I want to go straight onto the shop floor as a stylist, which I’m hoping I’ll be ready to do after gaining so much real-life work experience during my training.

" One of the highlights of my apprenticeship has been having the opportunity to compete with other Saks learners across the country during the annual National Saks Apprentice Awards. I still can’t believe I’ve topped my category both years, first when I was doing my Level 2 and then during my Level 3!  It’s great to have the opportunity to experience what it’s like to take part in a hair competition like that."
